The City of Malden held its Inaugural Ceremony on Tuesday, January 2nd in the Jenkins Auditorium of Malden High School. Mayor Gary Christenson along with members of the City Council and School Committee were sworn in for their new terms in traditional Malden style. The celebration began with newly appointed City Messenger Neal Anderson leading the delegation to the stage followed by the Malden Police and Fire Honor Guards. The Malden Girl Scouts initiated the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem was beautifully sung by Ward 5 Malden Resident Jennifer Dhanjee.

The event was co-emceed by outgoing Ward 5 City Councillor Barbara Murphy and School Committee Member Adam Weldai who were later recognized for having served the community so well and were acknowledged for their many contributions. Newly elected Ward 5 City Councillor Ari Taylor and Ward 5 School Committee Member Elizabeth Hortie were welcomed. State Senator Jason Lewis, State Representatives Paul Donato, Steve Ultrino and Kate Lipper Garabedian as well as Malden’s former Mayors Ed Lucey and Richard Howard were among Mayor Christenson’s guests on stage.

As is tradition, the City Council and the School Committee retired for organization to elect a new Council President and School Committee Vice Chair. Ward 6 City Councillor Steve Winslow was elected to serve as Council President and Ward 3 School Committee Member Jennifer Spadafora was chosen to serve as the School Committee’s Vice Chair.

Attendees enjoyed the ceremony along with wonderful performances by the Malden High School Choral Art Society, including a beautiful rendition of Hallelujah performed by Thalyta Andrade, Malden High School AO Step Team, and the Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy who entertained with their traditional Lion Dance.
