News Photo

Mayor Gary Christenson is reaching out to Malden residents in an effort to fill the  “resident member” position on the Human Rights and Fair Housing Commission (the “Commission”). Members of the Commission work to ensure that all residents, regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, sex, sexual identity, age, ancestry, sexual preference, familial status, marital status, veteran status, or physical, mental or emotional capacity or disability, are afforded equal opportunity in or access to credit eligibility, employment, housing, education, recreation, public accommodations, public services and licensing, and shall minimize unlawful discrimination by encouraging mutual understanding among all residents.

The Commission is comprised of seven individuals with varied backgrounds who have knowledge of existing resources, an understanding of how regional systems function, and who have experience with fair housing and discrimination issues. Three members are appointed by the Mayor and four are appointed by the City Council and include a representative of the Malden Housing Authority, a Malden-based representative of the National Association of Realtors, a representative of the Chamber of Commerce, a representative of a Malden-based disability advocacy organization, a representative of a Malden-based organization providing services to elders, and two resident members, one appointed by the Mayor and one by the City Council. Resident members may serve for one year from date of appointment. The Commission is currently meeting remotely on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 PM.
