Recently residents received a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau inviting them to go online to respond to the 2020 federal Census. Malden’s 2020 Complete Count Committee is urging everyone to complete their census today, April 1st! There had been a number of activities planned for today to encourage census taking, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic all have been canceled but we hope that everyone will complete their census from home today.
Every 10 years cities and towns have the opportunity to make sure every resident is counted. Having an accurate count of residents means more money for the community resulting in better schools, roads, transportation, housing, health care, and public safety. For every person not counted our community loses $2,400 in federal funding each year. As Malden is considered an undercounted community, it is imperative that we reach hard to count individuals. Currently 31.1% of Malden households have filled out the census compared to 35.2% of Massachusetts Households.
The Census is safe, easy, and confidential. Federal laws protect census responses and answers may only be used to produce statistics. By law the federal government cannot share information with immigration enforcement agencies, law enforcement agencies or allow it to be used to determine eligibility for government benefits.
Please take the time today to complete your census! You may respond online, over the phone, or by mail. Please visit www.my2020census.gov and be counted today.
