[ARCHIVED] City of Malden Declares State of Emergency

On Wednesday, March 18th, 2020, Mayor Gary Christenson signed an order declaring a State of Emergency in the City of Malden in conjunction with the Malden Board of Health’s declaration of a public health crisis. The formal declaration enables the City to take decisive action in conjunction with its Board of Health to control the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). It also gives the City the ability to facilitate the use of resources to respond to the impacts of the crisis, including but not limited to emergency expenditures and reimbursements from the federal government.

Additionally, during an emergency meeting, the Malden Board of Health issued an order restricting those types of services where members of the public may gather and/or are in close physical contact with staff and other individuals.  This includes, but is not limited to:

•          Hairdressers and barbers

•          Nail salons

•          Massage services

•          Body Art

•          Body Work

•          Fitness Centers

•          Houses of Worship

This Order does not include childcare facilities licensed by Early Education Care or services provided by a licensed allied health care provider such as, but not limited to, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy or retail stores. This afternoon, however, Governor Baker did announce that all education centers and family childcare providers will be closed effective March 23rd.

The Emergency Order also directs that all Malden Housing Authority properties implement procedures issued by the Malden Board of Health to restrict visitation as necessary to protect the health of residents and staff.

“I understand that these are severe measures and will have significant economic impact on many of our residents and businesses, but they are necessary and critical during this public health crisis,” said Mayor Christenson. Public health experts have made it clear that our best defense against the spread of COVID-19 is social distancing and this means limiting any interpersonal contact. We need to do all we can to help stop its spread so as not to overwhelm our health care system.”

Mayor Christenson further stated, “as our City confronts these very challenging times, I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. I am confident that by working together we will get through this.”
