Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a drug that works by blocking the effects of opioids in the body. This action reverses the life threatening effects of an opioid-related drug overdose. Narcan is fast acting and is used during overdoses involving drugs such as heroin and oxycodone. Police are often the first on scene at an emergency and in Malden, police respond to every medical emergency call. Malden PD began its Nasal Narcan program in 2017. Malden officers have access to Nasal Narcan Spray 24/7 and receive annual training in it's use. All Malden officers are also trained as first responders. Malden PD is proud to partner with the Malden Board of Health, the Malden Fire Department, and Cataldo Ambulance in our effort to reduce overdose deaths.
