Winter Parking

Overview

This year, there were two important changes to our Winter Parking regulations that we want residents to be aware of.

  1. Normally our winter parking restrictions for the City of Malden run from November 1st to April 1st. This year, instead of winter parking restrictions starting on November 1st, we will start the restrictions at the first winter event that takes place that requires our DPW to deploy winter weather operations such as plowing and/or sanding.
  2. We removed a previous restriction that prohibited overnight parking on approximately 100 streets. Residents whose streets were contained within the yellow highlighting of our previous years' flyers were required to vacate the street overnight are no longer required to do so. Although these overnight restrictions were removed, please be certain that you take note of other restrictions your street may have.

How To Get Notified About Winter Parking Restrictions AND Learn More About Winter Parking

Getting notified about winter parking alerts is as easy as signing up for our automated alert services.

  1. Our CodeRED Alert System provides residents the ability to enter contact information and be notified when the City declares a Snow Emergency.
  2. We provide additional notifications through out Street Alerts system.  This system also notifies residents when there is a winter weather alert but allows you to see parking restrictions at your specific street address.

What To Do If Your Car Is Towed

Vehicles that are towed due to a Snow Emergency Violation will be towed to one of our tow lots around the City. In order to find out where your vehicle has been towed, you can contact the Malden Police at 781-322-1212.  After confirming where the vehicle is, you will need to pay the tow yard $140 if you retrieve within 24 hours or be subject to a $35/day storage fee.

You will additionally have a parking ticket of $25 that must be paid to the City unless you plan to appeal the ticket. Instructions for payment/appeal can be found printed on the back of the ticket.

Where to Park During The Winter Season

  1. Be sure to take note of which side of the street you are permitted to park. The rule coincides with the year when the season starts and this is known as the General Rule of Winter Parking. Odd-numbered years indicate parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street, even-numbered years on the even-numbered side of the street (example: you live at 44 Main Street and the winter parking season started in 2018. This would indicate that you are able park on the same side of the street as your home).
  2. Be aware of how the rules change when we declare a snow emergency.  Some streets prohibit parking on both sides of the street, other streets can continue to observe the General Rule of winter parking explained above.  Our Street Alerts app can help you determine what the rules are.
  3. If you have off-street parking available such as a driveway or private parking lot, please use it. Not only will this ensure you will not receive any violations but it also helps neighbors who don't have any off-street parking available.
  4. During a snow emergency, we make certain public lots available to park in free of charge during the snow emergency. Be sure to find out which one is most convenient for you.
