Malden is Moving... toward healthy eating and active living!
In October 2014 the Mass in Motion Municipal Wellness and Leadership Grant Program awarded Malden with a $50,000 and the Mass in Motion Award for Malden is Moving! The purpose of this program was to implement local policy, systems and environmental change strategies to prevent and reduce overweight/obesity, chronic disease and associated risk factors to ultimately create a healthier community. This program engaged a cross section of local agencies, community groups, local businesses, coalitions, residents and youth to develop and implement healthier options for everyone. The primary focus was to provide residents with simple, practical and cost effective ways to improve healthy eating and active living.
Now, in 2015, the American Planning Association has presented the teens working within Malden is Moving! with a Social Advocacy award. The teens have been working on a Placemaking/Photovoice Project, where they worked to create healthy, green, and active public spaces for the residents of Malden by utilizing the Teen Enrichment Center, Lincoln Commons, and Fellsmere Pond.
Malden is Moving! will allow a new framework to make Malden a healthier community. The City of Malden Public Health Department in conjunction with its partners at the YWCA will coordinate the Malden is Moving initiative. Chris Webb, Director of Public Health has appointed Christina Murphy as the Mass in Motion Coordinator. She coordinates the development and implementation of strategies that will improve healthy eating and active living for Malden residents.
