Malden Celebrates Flag Day 2018

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

The City of Malden celebrated Flag Day on June 14th at historic Bell Rock Memorial Park at the memorial monument known as “The Flag Defenders.” The annual event was coordinated by Ward 1 City Councillor Peg Crowe and School Committee member Mike Drummey. In attendance were elected officials Mayor Gary Christenson, State Representative Steve Ultrino, City Councillors Paul Condon and Steve Winslow, and School Committee Members Rob McCarthy and Lenny Iovino. Also in attendance were Director of Veterans Services Kevin Jarvis, School Superintendent John Oteri, members of the Military, Malden Fire and Police Departments and many residents. Everyone enjoyed patriotic music performed by the Malden High School Choral Arts Society and the Malden High School Band. The Invocation was delivered by Seven Mile Road Church Pastor Dan Ko. The Girl Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance and recited the poem "I am the Flag" by Ruth Apperson Rous. A traditional Flag folding ceremony was demonstrated with Sergeant Joe Pullen officiating while Boy Scout Austin Shaw read the meaning for each of the folds of the Flag. Pastor Dan Ko closed the ceremony.

Flag Day commemorates the June 14, 1777 adoption of the United States Flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14th as Flag Day and on August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating every June 14th as National Flag Day.
