The Malden Public Library owns a varied collection of artwork, which is housed in the art galleries, in the Converse Memorial building. The Lower Art Gallery, with the exception of the gas lights, is as close to what it was in 1885 as twentieth-century technology and building codes allow. The art collection exists through the generosity of Elisha Converse. Upon Converse's death in 1904, he left $50,000, the income only to be used specifically for works of art.
