Firefighters’ Memorial Sunday Held June 3rd

Monday, June 4, 2018

Many turned out for the 149th Annual Malden Fire Department Firefighters’ Memorial Sunday on Sunday, June 3rd. Every year since 1869 on the first Sunday of June, a Memorial Service is held at the Forest Dale Cemetery following a march from the Central Fire Station on Sprague Street. Fire Chief Kevin Finn, Fire Commissioner Emery Haskell, retired Fire Chiefs and Firefighters along with Mayor Gary Christenson and City Councillor Barbara Murphy marched with the Greater Boston Pipes & Drums in remembrance of the Malden Fire Department’s 16 fallen comrades who were lost in the line of duty and all Malden firefighters who have passed away. Retired Fire Captain Arnie Hammersley received a special bouquet in honor of his service.

A special signal of 10-1-5 was sounded over the fire radio and on the Memorial Bell at Forestdale Cemetery that was installed in 1958. Special signal 10-1-5 was a signal that was tapped out over the old warning bell system that Malden used up until 2014, to signify a fallen firefighter’s last alarm. Firefighter James Fagan was the first Malden firefighter to die from injuries sustained while in the performance of his duties. Lieutenant James Doherty was the last Malden firefighter to die in the line of duty on May 23, 1969.
